Bastianich “Vespa” Bianco, 2011, Friuli, Italy

12 Jan

DSC03189A white blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Picolit, a grape native to Italy’s Friuli region, which this wine calls home. The bouquet of citrusy minerality evolves into wildflowers, clover honey and ripe pear. The palate is intriguingly tannic for a white wine, with fine acid structure making it an ideal companion to rich seafood, like scallops seared in bacon fat. $40

Oveja Negra Sauvignon Blanc/Carménère Blend, 2012, Maule Valley, Chile

16 Oct

099You read that right: a white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Carménère. Truly unique, fresh and aromatic wine with citrusy grapefruit notes, a hint of tropical fruit, subtle mineral character and a fruity, herbal touch from the Carmenére. Broil some halibut and appreciate this offbeat but approachable wine. $14

Viña Mein Blanco, 2011, Ribeiro, Spain

085Great-value, unique wine made of native Galician varieties. Well-balanced, fresh and dry, with great citrusy expression. Mostly (70%) composed of the traditional variety Treixadura, complemented by other grapes native to the region: Godello, Loureirra, Torrontés, Albariño and Lado. Extraordinary presence and length on the finish, making it a great friend to any shellfish preparation. $22

Corte alla Flora “Podere del Giuggiolo,” 2012, Tuscany, Italy

068A fresh and fruity white blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Notes of lemongrass and grapefruit provide great aromatic balance, and the palate is crisp and thirst-quenching. Delightful with chilled shellfish—shrimp cocktail, perhaps. $12

Shebang White Cuvée II, NV, North Coast, California

15 Oct

053A unique blend of 60% Pinot Gris, 25% Muscadelle and 15% Sauvignon Blanc. Pretty and fresh with Asian pear, ginger and Meyer lemon on the nose and palate. The kind of white wine that elevates even the simplest Chinese take-out. $16
