H&M Hofer Organic Zweigelt Rosé, 2012, Weinland, Austria

DSCN1960-001Zweigelt is an Austrian hybrid grape, a cross of native varieties Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, created by Dr. Friedrich Zweigelt in the early 20th Century. It’s typically vinified as a dry red wine, but it also makes knockout rosé. Hofer’s organic (they’ve been voluntarily organic and biodynamic since the ’80s–note the “BIO” in the center of the “O” in the label shot at right) version is both fresh and dense, with zingy acidity and a supple mouthfeel. It shows notes of orange zest and marzipan, with a touch of ripe red raspberry. Beautiful stuff for alfresco appetizers, maybe char-grilled eggplant with harissa-spiked yogurt sauce on grilled flatbread. $20
