Domaine des Pères de l’Église “Le Calice de Saint Pierre” Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2010, Rhône Valley, France

16 Jan

DSC032172010 was an amazing vintage in the Rhône, and this is an extraordinary value! Traditional CDP made by fourth-generation family winemakers. Complex aromas of cooked red fruits with hints of leather and tobacco. Pleasantly weighty on the palate, with fruit amplified by earth, spice and silky tannins. $38

Promesses de France Côtes du Rhône, 2012, Rhône Valley, France

12 Jan

DSC03181From the southern stretches of France’s Rhône River Valley, this Grenache-based blend shows intense red fruit on the nose. The full-bodied palate is all strawberry jam and baking spice. Pop open a bottle for traditional French onion soup topped with melted Gruyère. $10

Domaine de Nalys, 2010, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France

15 Oct

015From an extraordinary vintage in the Rhône, this red shows ripe, spicy aromatics with loads of red berry notes. Cinnamon and blackberries dance on the palate to create a harmonious and complete package, with a long, fruit-driven finish that stays fresh and vibrant to the very end. Roast pork loin and baked apples would suit this stunner nicely. $49

Domaine de la Verde, 2011, Vacqueyras, France

15 Oct

014Perfumed and forward, with a nice sandalwood note leading the way for cooked raspberry and red currant. Smoldering cardamom and tea notes enliven the lengthy finish. Suave, muscular southern-Rhône red that would do well with bison steaks au poivre. $20

Gilles Barge “Cuvée du Plessy,” 2007, Côte-Rôtie, France

15 Oct

011Classic Côte-Rôtie, a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. Rich, tannic and concentrated with elements of cracked pepper, ripe strawberry and an appealing touch of florality from the Viognier. Delicious wine from a notable Rhône producer. Decant and drink now or lay it down—this one’s a keeper. Grilled red meat or game would be a beautiful table mate. $62
