H & B (Hecht & Bannier), 2011, Languedoc, France

15 Oct

009ORGANIC. Mainly Syrah, with Grenache and Carignan. Core flavors of red currant, plum and crunchy raspberry with notes of espresso and leather. The palate offers gobs of fruit that spill over into a powerful finish. Languedoc-Roussillon wines are diamonds in the rough, offering great value for the money. Pop the cork with some saucy beef ribs on a cool fall afternoon. $18

H&M Hofer Organic Zweigelt Rosé, 2012, Weinland, Austria

17 Aug

DSCN1960-001Zweigelt is an Austrian hybrid grape, a cross of native varieties Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, created by Dr. Friedrich Zweigelt in the early 20th Century. It’s typically vinified as a dry red wine, but it also makes knockout rosé. Hofer’s organic (they’ve been voluntarily organic and biodynamic since the ’80s–note the “BIO” in the center of the “O” in the label shot at right) version is both fresh and dense, with zingy acidity and a supple mouthfeel. It shows notes of orange zest and marzipan, with a touch of ripe red raspberry. Beautiful stuff for alfresco appetizers, maybe char-grilled eggplant with harissa-spiked yogurt sauce on grilled flatbread. $20

Lucinda & Millie Organic Chardonnay, 2010, Mendocino County, California

17 Aug

DSCN1959-001Lucinda, a sheep, and Millie, a chicken, are the mascots of this organic vineyard and farm. Lucinda and her flock graze between the vines to control cover crops; Millie’s friends act as the pest control squad, gathering unwanted insects from the vineyard. The Chardonnay is similarly clean and green, with only 10% of the wine seeing oak. All the bright acidity and green apple notes shine through with perfect clarity, making this a very food-friendly Chardonnay. Enjoy it with spice-rubbed beer can chicken. $14
