Vino dei Fratelli Nero d’Avola, 2011, Sicily, Italy

14 Jan

DSC03195Nero d’Avola is a grape indigenous to Sicily, where the warm, dry climate contributes to the ripe, dense fruit flavors characteristic of the variety. Fratelli’s is luscious and explosive with ripe red plum and blueberry, full-bodied and mouth-filling across the palate. This is great cocktail wine, easy on the tannins, but it’s also a good match for grilled meats and aged cheeses. $10

“Scurati” Nero d’Avola by Ceuso, 2011, Sicily, Italy

065Juicy aromas of blackberry, blueberry and cherry with subtle hints of licorice and loam. A terrifically well-balanced wine with big fruit and low enough acidity to pair with tangy, fresh tomato-based pasta sauces. $18
