Concha y Toro Gran Reserva Carmenere, 2011, Peumo, Chile

12 Jan

11Chilean Carmenere splits the difference between the tannic structure of Cabernet and the more rounded mocha notes of Merlot. CYT’s Gran Reserva shows plenty of earth behind the deep, dark fruit. When we ran our inaugural Chili & Wine Showdown back in November, this bottle stole Best Wine and Best Pairing! $15

16 Oct

099You read that right: a white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Carménère. Truly unique, fresh and aromatic wine with citrusy grapefruit notes, a hint of tropical fruit, subtle mineral character and a fruity, herbal touch from the Carmenére. Broil some halibut and appreciate this offbeat but approachable wine. $14

Casa Silva Carménère, 2012, Colchagua Valley, Chile

16 Oct

098An intense, dark ruby in color, this seamlessly smooth Carménère offers defined aromas of ripe red fruits, orange peel, tobacco and coffee. There’s a toasty intimation of well-integrated French oak, and the juicy, rounded palate has soft tannins and notes of cinnamon and blackberry. Should be ideal with roast chicken or spicy Mexican food. $12
