Henry’s Drive “Dead Letter Office” Shiraz, 2009, South Australia

12 Jan

DSC03188A blend of Shiraz grapes from Padthaway and McLaren Vale in South Australia. Aromas of black plum, oaky vanilla and dark chocolate introduce the rich palate, where bushels of dark fruit are anchored by moderate tannin and crisp acidity. Great with roast pork! $22

Heggies Vineyard Chardonnay, 2011, Eden Valley, South Australia

16 Oct

103Beautiful Australian Chardonnay! Fermented in French oak with indigenous yeasts before partial malolactic fermentation. The wine has a subtle toasty character which mingles well with the ripe green apple and pear notes on the nose and palate, before a creamy, rounded finish. Should be in perfect harmony with spicy Szechuan cuisine. $25

Leeuwin Estates “Prelude” Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, 2007, Margaret River, South West Australia

16 Oct

102Beautiful Left-Bank Bordeaux-style blend, and it’s got some great bottle age on it. The complex bouquet of blackcurrants and dark cherries is underscored by dried lavender and fresh tobacco. Lively and youthful, the palate has integrated layers of black forest fruits, cacao and silky, fine tannins. Balanced fruit and acid structure finishing with mineral and graphite notes. Delightful with braised short ribs. $24

Langmeil “Three Gardens” SMG, 2011, Barossa Valley, South Australia

16 Oct

101Old Barossa winemakers referred to their vineyards as “gardens,” and three such gardens are the source of the Shiraz, Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) and Grenache in this blend. It shows dark, ripe fruit, with fine tannins adding pique to the rounded palate. Loads of finesse, perfect for roast leg of lamb bathed in minced garlic, salt and olive oil. $20
