COS Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, 2010, Sicily, Italy

15 Jan

DSC03201When was the last time you had a Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico? If the answer was “never,” give this bad boy a try. A blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, both grapes native to Sicily. “Cerasuolo” translates to cherry-colored, or having the aroma or flavor of cherries–both translations apply here.

“Complex layers of salumi, forest floor and spice box lead off in this medium-bodied red, as firm tannins settle around the pure cherry and currant fruit. Needs time in the cellar, but the long, minerally finish shows potential. Best from 2014 through 2020. 5,000 cases made.” 92 pts WS. $36

Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, 2010, Tuscany, Italy

DSC03199Lush, gorgeous Sangiovese from Brunello’s little sibling down the road, and great bang for  the buck. “This round version is laced with black cherry and raspberry fruit, showing hints of cocoa and spice. Firm tannins lend support, making this well-balanced overall, with a lingering finish of warm chocolate cake. Drink now through 2022. 4,000 cases imported.” 91 pts WS. $32
