April 2014

2012 Viticoltori Senesi Aretini Bischero Toscana IGT

Don’t be confused by all those Italian words. Viticoltori Senesi Aretini is the cooperative of Tuscan winegrowers who grew the Sangiovese grapes used to make the wine they named “Bischero.” Fruity and un-oaked, with lively red cherry and raspberry. Enjoy with meaty baked ziti.

Cleopatra’s Pearls

2013 Casal Garcia Vinho Verde

Vinho Verde, that most refreshing of Portuguese white wines, is zippy, zingy and oh-so Spring-y! A lightly sparkling blend of native varieties Trajadura, Loureiro, Arinto and Azal, this crisp white is a riot of fresh-cut apple and juicy citrus, with mouth-watering acidity that makes it a perfect match for rich seafood, like Cajun-spiced boiled shrimp or teriyaki-glazed salmon.

Treasured Rubies

2011 El Cortijillo Tempranillo

Un-oaked Tempranillo from La Mancha, in central Spain. Aging in stainless steel tanks preserves the clarity of fruit, showcasing ripe raspberry, red currant and cherry notes accented by just a hint of desert spice. Medium-bodied and exceedingly approachable, this is beautiful any-night springtime red wine for everything from pizza to paella.

2013 Maximo Garnacha

Fresh, fruit-driven red wine from Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. Fermented in stainless steel tanks before aging for six months in a combination of steel and oak. Expressive strawberry, raspberry and blackberry flavors dance on the palate behind aromas of chocolate and an elegant layer of spices. Try this juicy red with a proper Reuben sandwich.

Wondrous Whites

2012 La Cappuccina Soave

La Cappuccina is a family-run, BIOS-certified organic estate located in an old Capuchin monastery in northern Italy’s Veneto region. Five months’ aging on its lees gives it wonderful presence on the palate, where the pronounced aromatics of citrus and tropical fruits meet a stony minerality. A refreshing aperitif on a warm afternoon, this will also be great with creamy pastas.

Regal Reds

2008 Le Poggette Colli Amerini Rosso Superiore

Colli Amerini DOC (now known as Amelia), in central Italy’s landlocked Umbria, is known for its rustic wines based on the Sangiovese grape. Bright cherry fruit is given depth and complexity by ripe tannins and lovely acidity. This red will sing with red-sauce Italian dishes.

2010 Domaine de Coste Chaude Cuvée Florilège Côtes du Rhône

A mouthwatering blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah from an exceptional vintage in France’s Rhône Valley. Strawberry jam and cassis liqueur frame the bouquet. The palate is delightfully lush and dense with berries and plums. Delicious with aged cheeses.

American Beauties

2009 Valley of the Moon Barbera

100% estate-grown Barbera from an historic Sonoma County winery. Bright red cherry and ripe plum aromas accented by floral and cedar notes. On the palate, cherry and plum are elevated by savory fennel and spicy oak notes. Bright acidity gives the finish length and complexity. Pop this bottle with grilled pork chops at your first spring barbecue!

European Classics

2006 Chantecôtes Cécilia Côtes du Rhône

This red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan is typical of the southern Rhône valley. Intense strawberry jam aromas are balanced by earthy, peppery notes on the palate. Having integrated nicely with bottle age, this wine will be delicious with spicy pulled pork shoulder.

2011 Clos les Montys Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie

100% Melon de Bourgogne from a superior parcel of weathered granite soils on the Huchet family estate in France’s Loire Valley. Acacia flowers greet the nose, and the palate is delineated by brisk acidity and Meyer lemon. Crisp, minerally and ideal with seared scallops.

The Bubbles

NV Vallformosa Clasic Brut Cava

In Penedés, Spain, just west of Barcelona in Catalonia, the Domènech family have been in the Cava business since 1865. A traditional Cava blend of Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parallada, Clasic shows aromas of green apple and apricot with hints of toastiness on the finish. Mouthwatering and refreshing, this is fabulous cocktail bubbly that will also dress up any dinner.

Cellar Master

2010 La Source du Château de Sours Bordeaux Blanc

Fresh, elegant white Bordeaux, with savory, smoky Sauvignon Blanc fleshed out by Semillon. Tantalizing aromas of lime and green figs lead to sustained lemon notes reverberating on the palate over vanilla and cinnamon accents. Perfect with simple roast chicken.
