54. Koehler-Ruprecht Riesling Halbtrocken Kabinett 2012 Pfalz

Today’s German lesson: Koehler-Ruprecht is the producer, Riesling is the grape, Halbtrocken (“half-dry”) means there’s a touch of residual sugar balancing the variety’s hallmark acidity, expressed here in grapes harvested at Kabinett ripeness levels. Peachy, stony and floral.

55. Allendorf Spätburgunder 2013 Rheingau

Little-known fact: After France and the USA, Germany has third most acreage of Pinot Noir under vine. And if you look closely, you can even make out the variety’s Burgundian roots in its Germanic name. Nice acidity balances ripe cherry, raspberry and high-toned cranberry flavors.
