Dr. Konstantin Frank was a pioneer of the Finger Lakes in the 1950’s, producing some of the first wines from Vitis vinifera in the region. This Chardonnay shines with fresh pineapple, dried apricot and honeysuckle notes with undertones of minerality and savory oak.

At the beginning of spring, Farina’s finished Valpolicella wine is pumped over the wine-drenched skins and pulp left over from their Amarone fermentation. This ripassato process infuses the wine with the tarry, spicy kick of Amarone. Intense and peppery with notes of leather, plum and cherry jam.

Quickly: it’s “kass-SEE-nah KEE-ko”, and they’ve been making wine in Piedmont for three generations. Vines for this bottling average 20 years of age. Ethereal, perfumed fragrances of violet, Marasca cherry, and spice. Luxurious on the palate, its cherry and tobacco swaddled in plush tannins.

Scarpetta is a joint venture from the minds behind Frasca Food & Wine in Boulder. Named for their signature primi, frico caldo, this is a blend of Friulano and Chardonnay that’s just as addictive. Peach, guava, Meyer lemon and a distinct floral note meet a flood of acidity and a lovely mineral finish.

14FCLS 5656. Prà Staforte Soave Classico 2007 Veneto

Stunning, vibrant Garganega that’s wearing its age incredibly well! Six months on the lees with regular batonnage (“stirring”) added a pronounced, toasty nuttiness underlining apricots and white flowers. Elegant and fluid across the palate, with a spine of acidity suggesting this clock is still ticking.

Austria

14FCLS 5757. Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner 2013 Wagram

The Wagram, a 25-mile-long ridge located just northwest of Vienna, consists of thousands of years of sediments left behind by the Danube. Grüner Veltliner loves these soils, and Anton Bauer’s is crisp and lively, with ripe apple and pear fruit balanced by fresh citric acidity and white pepper.

14FCLS 5858. Paul D. Roter Veltliner 2013 Wagram

First, this confusing aside: Roter Veltliner is not related to Grüner V—it is, in fact, a much older variety. Paul D’s is decorated with lemon-lime aromas, green apple and apricot. Citrusy and surprisingly fleshy on the palate, with a mouthwatering, stony mineral finish.

Austria’s red wines are often overlooked in favor of its whites, but this fun and fruity blend of Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir shows how accessible and enjoyable they can be. Ripe red berries combine with a subtle spiciness on the round, smooth palate.

14FCLS 6060. Bodega Inurrieta Orchídea Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Navarra

There’s not a lot of Sauvignon Blanc coming out of Spain, and this wine will make you ask, “Why not?” Zippy, fresh SB combining pineapple and grapefruit with herbaceous undertones on a palate that is at once brisk and creamy.
